Jenny Freeman

Jenny Freeman is an Associate Professor (Reader) in Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation at Plymouth University in Devon, United Kingdom. She qualified as a physiotherapist in Perth Western Australia in 1983. From 1987 she worked specifically in adult neurology, working clinically at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery in London from 1988 – 1998, and then in a research post at the Institute of Neurology until 2010. She completed her PhD in 1997 which included the first randomised controlled trial investigating the effectiveness of multi-disciplinary rehabilitation in people with MS (Supervisors Professor Alan Thompson and Professor Dawn Langdon, Institute of Neurology, University College London). Her research since that time has predominately involved clinical trials investigating the process and outcomes of uni and multi-disciplinary rehabilitation interventions, with a particular focus on people with MS. Alongside this she has collaborated with laboratory based studies investigating the mechanisms underpinning disability (in co-operation with Professor Jon Marsden). Jenny has led innovations to engage and support clinical practitioners in implementing clinical research in MS; and has been involved in a range of initiatives aimed at improving care in this patient group. She was awarded a Fellowship of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy in 2013.

Jenny Freeman was closely involved in setting up the Physiotherapy Programme at Plymouth University, and since then she been active in increasing research capacity within the School of Health Professions. Her role involves teaching and research supervision at both undergraduate and post graduate level. She is Deputy Director of the Centre for Health and Social Care Innovation at Plymouth University, which is an Affiliated Centre of the Joanna Briggs Institute for Systematic Reviews. She continues to engage in clinical practice, and has a weekly MS clinical commitment within the National Health Service.
